Mazon Labs is one of the biggest pharmaceutical corporations within the GCPS and part of Mazon Holdings

About

Its glossy HD vids regularly play between DreadBall rushes and show happy scientists busy working in glistening, clean laboratories. The company’s slogan ‘for a better galaxy’ heralds its much talked about quest to stamp out disease using new antibiotics based on the spores, fungi and alien lifeforms the GCPS discovers in its quest to reach further into space.

However, scratch beneath the shining surface of Mazon Labs and you’ll quickly find something far darker. Its facilities are guarded by some of the GCPS’ deadliest rangers and it’s not uncommon to see a Strider patrolling the boundary. It’s not clear if the rangers and Striders are there to keep intruders out, or to keep something else in.

Although some of the scientists are engaged in using their discoveries for the betterment of mankind, the majority are working hard to weaponize their findings. These new pathogens can then be sold on the black market to the highest bidder and quickly find their way into combat situations. It’s not uncommon to see empty Mazon-branded canisters alongside shell casings on a battlefield.

Perhaps the most concerning thing about Mazon Labs is that it’s just a smaller company under the much wider umbrella of Mazon Holdings. The parent company dabbles in all-manner of cutting-edge technology from cybernetic enhancements to wormhole research and bio-implants, which gives Mazon Labs the opportunity to ‘borrow’ research in order to further its own technological advances. Of course, at no point do Mazon scientists ever ask whether they ‘should’, they’re just concerned with whether they ‘can’…

With an unknown amount of Mazon research facilities spread across numerous planets, those in their employ are often caught up in the chaos of a Containment Protocol. Mazon press statements brush over the fact the initial outbreaks are frequently situated near their facilities – claiming it’s pure coincidence.

One of these facilities on Eiras was used to experiment with 'Vector-P', another on Pluton III seems to be responsible for the intrusion of the Nightstalkers into this galaxy. Experimentation revolving around the Veer-myn also seem to be part of Mazon's interests, as the tragic fate of the CSS Zloveshy Vassily shows, unknown to most.

Military

Despite the disaster beneath the surface of Eiras, the management of that complex remain some of Mazon Holdings’ most vital assets. Mazon Life’s advanced bio-engineering has kept both the stoic Commander Graves and genius Dr. Koyner alive and infiltrating or even instigating Deadzones to further Mazon’s nefarious goals. Often accompanied by an Organic Data unit to retrieve critical data for future research, these combat veterans are not to be underestimated.

Mazon Holdings take advantage of the latest technology and discoveries in order to protect their operatives – or more specifically, their research – in the field. The ever-reliable TAC drones can lay down heavy fire, or provide remote reconnaissance. These are backed up by the disturbing extra-dimensional aliens known as the Krastavor. Deploying these cybernetically enhanced arachnids alongside the remote or AI controlled drones avoids the threat these voracious creatures would pose to humanoid allies.

The product of dubious procedures by Mazon Labs’ recently acquired bio-scientist Renaldo Abominava, the newly formed Reanimation Division have proven to be an economic and military boon for Mazon’s Deadzone operations. Cybernetic implants bypass the subject’s emotions and moral codes to turn them into ruthless, mindless soldiers that will follow commands without question and without hesitation.

Rather than searching the galaxy for the best scientists available, Mazon Labs prefers to employ those with loose ethical codes who will protect their work at all costs. To back up the Lab Technicians the Mazon Security Guard is a typical – and expendable – low level grunt hired and fired at whim and often but not only found at Mazon-controlled laboratories throughout the GCPS.

Drafted in from the best of the GCPS forces, the Urbana Black Wing Marines are skilled in black ops, ready to withstand any ‘hostile’ takeovers at Mazon. They are regularly issued with a mono cycle when patrolling the sprawling compounds of Mazon facilities. Like most corporate military outfits, Black Wing has a specialised Engineer Corps trained in demolitions and sabotage. The latter of these skills is especially useful when setting traps for potential new “test subjects”

The secretive experiments within the bowels of Mazon laboratories often require live specimens. Occasionally they are let loose, so scientists can observe their subjects in test conditions. These Plague Victims are often drafted from prison planets such as Perestia. When Mazon’s experiments escape, the corporation is forced to call in the best, and most ruthless. This dangerous work requires dedicated specialists willing to get the job done. Rangers are highly trained and skilled in combat.

Aberration Specimen are similar in shape to a Stage 1A 'Plague Lord', but larger and far more aggressive. Mazon employees only deploy these horrors in the most desperate circumstances and often while a Strider is nearby. The Black Wing arsenal wouldn’t be complete without these ubiquitous combat vehicles, garrisoned at Mazon Labs facilities as a failsafe in the event that an Aberration breaks loose.

In the event of a bigger conflict, Mazon is known to unleash even more specimen in form of flocks of Murderbirds or Plague Swarms to overwhelm the enemy forces. These are accompanied by Mules and Hornets, safely deploying their Urbana troops to the front or even wielding experimental weapons.

History

Mazon Labs is one of the tentacles of Mazon Holdings that has become the focus of much speculation and rumour in the past few decades. First created by one of the distant relations of Johnson Mazon, Rupert Connor, Mazon Labs was then passed down through the Connor family until eventually Artemis Connor took over as CEO – where he has remained for an unusually long time.

On the surface Mazon Labs is an ethical and responsible medial research company that works at the bleeding edge of pharmaceutical endeavours. Over the years it has been responsible for creating vaccines for the notorious Red Planet Flu, which wiped out millions, and eradicating grav sickness for the majority of humanity. With each new success, Artemis Connor is quick to appear across the GCPS media networks to talk about his latest triumph and the corporations breathe a collective sigh of relief that Mazon Labs is doing all it can to make humanity’s journey into the stars as smooth as possible.

However, scratch beneath Artemis’ shareholder-pleasing smiles and there are whispers of a much murkier Mazon Labs. The rumours began when the Rebs began digging into Mazon’s research, in an effort to expose their corruption. Files were leaked onto Reb-Net that showed the cure for the Red Planet Flu had come about after Mazon Labs tested the vaccines on the indigenous species of Cavlax III. The inhabitants were all but wiped out by the testing as the flu ran rampant across the planet, while the Mazon Labs researchers inspected their monitor read outs, safe in the shuttles orbiting above. Connor quickly dismissed the rumours and said Mazon Labs was there to save the inhabitants, not kill them. The other corps simply closed their eyes and turned away.

Well, almost all the other corporations. BioMed Industrial was a bitter rival to Mazon Labs that claimed it would often have its research stolen by Mazon spies or would fail to secure a contract because of involvement from Mazon Labs. One of their employees started to research the cause of Plague outbreaks on different planets and started to notice a worrying trend: they were often planets where Mazon Labs had one of its research facilities.

During humanity’s progress into the far reaches of space, Plague outbreaks have been one of the greatest risks posed to the progress of profit-hungry corporations. Typically these breakouts have come after the discovery of a mysterious monolith or artefact and once an epidemic started, it would run rampant. However, in recent years, some of the Plague flare-ups have been much smaller. Victims would appear from nowhere, without the discovery of a monolith, but would quickly be controlled by Mazon Labs security staff. Artemis Connor would herald it as an example of Mazon Labs’ constant work to protect humanity, while BioMed would appear on media networks to ask how the outbreak had started in the first place.

Then, possibly with assistance from the Rebs network, BioMed released a video showing a Mazon Labs facility. From the outside it appeared more like a fortress than a research facility. Heavily armoured striders patrolled the exterior, while Urbana Black Wing Rangers stood guard with rifles trained on the buildings inside the facility, rather than guarding it from outside intruders. Once inside, the video showed lab technicians working with mysterious gene sequencers, while unidentifiable bodies laid on gurneys covered with sheets… occasionally appearing to move and twitch.

However, the most shocking part of the video came after the individual filming went past the bright, white lights of the labs and into the gloomy bowels of the facility. Here in grimy cells with dim lights that flickered and sputtered, it was clear to see Plague victims howling and throwing themselves against blood-stained, neodurium-reinforced glass. Through one small window, it was possible to make out the shadow of a towering Aberration.

Before the footage cut out, another cell showed shambling figures with raw and weeping cybernetic implants as they paced around, seemingly unaware of their whereabouts. The video ended with security guards and Urbana Black Wing Rangers approaching the camera, along with a rapid sound of gunfire before the camera hit the floor.

If BioMed was hoping the revelations would cripple Mazon Labs, it must have been disappointed by the media response. Artemis Connor dismissed the video as a complete fabrication by Rebs sympathisers that were working with BioMed and wanted to disrupt Mazon’s key research for the betterment of humanity. Instead, the spotlight turned on BioMed and its links with the Rebs networks. Its share price collapsed overnight and, before its board could rally round, BioMed became the latest victim of the fickle corporate markets. Meanwhile, Mazon Labs slunk back into the shadows to carry on its research undisturbed.

It may not be clear exactly what that research is but what is clear, however, is that there is something rotten at the core of Mazon Labs and it will do whatever it can to protect that secret.
