Chovar are a large, diaphanous, tentacled creatures, able to float in many atmospheres thanks to buoyancy glands contained within their bell-shaped bodies.

About

Originating from the Gas planet Cho, they are highly intelligent and psychic. The GCPS is dominated but not exclusively populated by humans. The Chovar are one example of an alien race that has been incorporated more or less completely. Frequently they are used as witnesses and notaries during the negotiation and signing of important contracts. As such, many Chovar enjoy considerable standing and influence, even amongst the highest strata of corporate bureaucracy. However, questions have been raised about the ethics and legality of the use of Chovar ‘mind-nets’ in frontier research outposts where they are capable of astounding computational feats without the need for fragile high-end equipment.

Allegedly, these shoals of Chovar are little more than prisoners and live in secluded confinement while they serve their corporate masters. The liberation of such groups is believed to be a high-priority for Rebel crews, but whether they truly do this for the freedom of the Chovar, or simply to obtain the information held within their giant brains, is a matter of further debate.

The Chovar are among the strangest sentient creatures encountered by the GCPS: intensely telepathic creatures that bear a striking resemblance to the jellyfish of Old Earth. They exist in a shared consciousness, but despite this (or possibly because of it) they are fiercely individualistic, constantly seeking out new cultures and technologies.

In battle, Chovar Psychics are often employed to give squad leaders a tactical advantage, and they can rarely be found among the ranks of everyone from Enforcers to Rebs. A Chovar bases its projections on pure science and statistical analysis, often giving observers the impression of supreme foresight, which is assumed to be the reason behind stories that they can see into the future. They are often seen as cold and calculating, overlooking the “human element” and accounting for chance simply as a percentage point, leading some particularly headstrong or emotional leaders to simply ignore the advice of a Chovar.

Lieutenant Fillon of the Rebs Crew Agents of Mercy is famously critical of the Chovar, stating on-record that “fortune never favours a foregone conclusion”. In reality, only one thing is certain – the inclusion of a Psychic in a squad signifies it is perhaps the most important and dangerous mission a soldier will ever take part in. After all, only the Chovar really knows if they will ever come back.

All Chovar are psychic, with many choosing to spend their time contemplating the great mysteries of the universe while linked together as part of a mind-choir. This is not without its risks. Chovar spend months preparing to enter such a bond, for if a single member has not purged all impure thoughts it can gradually taint the entire empathic link. If left unchecked this will eventually cause the other conjoined members of the group to wither and die. Each death leaves a lingering consciousness, detached from its physical body, meshed into the collective psyche of the remaining Chovar. As the final link is severed, the lone remaining creature is driven utterly insane by the conflicting personalities now trapped within its mind. These deranged creatures, referred to as Psychozoans, are often picked up by mercenary fleets and DreadBall sponsors looking to exploit their devastating mental skill and utter lack of empathy.
